We mourn the passing, b’sayva tova at the age of 102, of Rabbi Dr. Moshe Carmilly-Weinberger Z”L Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University. Dr. Carmilly was born in Budapest in 1908. He received his Doctorate in 1934 from the University of Budapest and he studied at the Breslov Institute where he received Smicha in 1935. In 1936 he became the Chief Rabbi of Kluge, the capital of Transylvania, a community of 18,000 Jews. During the Holocaust, Dr. Carmilly helped 1200 Jews get exit visas out of Transylvania. Dr. Carmilly finally came to Israel himself in 1944. From 1948-1950 Dr. Carmilly served in the Israeli consulate in Budapest. Dr. Carmilly returned to Israel and served as principal of an elementary school and a high school. In 1957, Dr. Carmilly was offered the position of Professor of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University where he taught from 1957-1975 when he retired as Profesor Emeritus. Dr. Carmilly published 250 articles and 15 books. Both of my parents, Edythe and Jerry Margolin were studentsof Dr. Carmilly at Yeshiva University. Dr. Carmilly’s wife, Sarah passed away in 1972 and when I was born in 1973, my parents named me after Sarah (by adding in the vav and nun). My family has kept in touch with Dr. Carmilly over the years and I had the honor of seeing him right after he turned 100 at his apartment in Manhattan. He was still reading, writing and lecturing. Dr. Carmilly did not have any children and therefore there is no one who is physically sitting Shiva for him. However, he had many students over the years who are spiritually mourning for him. In Memory of Dr. Carmilly, we are establishing the Torat Moshe Library and Scholarship Funds to help grant scholarships to serious young women who may otherwise not be able to afford to study Torah in Israel for the year at Midreshet Devora. Please help us build a Torah Library at Midreshet Devora in Memory of Dr. Carmilly Dedications: $54- One Sefer$72- Two Sefarim$118- Set of Chumashim$180- Set of Chumashim with English Translation$250- Set of Midrashim$360- Small Set of Midrashim with English Translation$500- Large Set of Midrashim with English Translation$750- Sets of Mefarshim in English Translation$1000- Sets of Modern Commentaries on the Torah Please click on the following link to donate on line http://toratreva.org/Joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7&Itemid=7 Or mail a check payable to Torat Reva Yerushalayim to: Torat Reva Yerushalayim, Inc.US Address75 Berkeley AvenueYonkers, NY 10705718-593-4162 (US phone # that rings in Israel) Contributions of any amount to the Torat Moshe Scholarship Fund would be greatly appreciated in order to help keep Dr. Carmilly’s legacy alive and to ensure that every qualified student who would like to attend Midreshet Devora will have the opportunity to do so. Please click on the following link to donate on line http://toratreva.org/Joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7&Itemid=7

Torah From the Land of Israel is the subtitle of a small but poignant and
powerful book, Parsha Points, by Sharona Margolin Halickman. Parsha is the
weekly portion read on Shabbat in chanting melody from the Torah scroll in the
synagogue. Parsha Points are Sharona Margolin Halickmans’s acute observations on
the weekly Parsha text based on her depth of knowledge and feeling, forever
teaching, forever rendering the Torah messages into guidelines for life.
Parsha Points is published by Trout Rave Yerushalayim, a unique
educational institute founded by the author, providing Torah study groups in
English, Hebrew and French for women and men of all ages in private homes,
synagogues, senior centers, nursing homes, and even in places of business! It is
also offers a unique Bat-Mitzvah Program for Women of all ages, the actual
ceremony culminating in Jerusalem. It also arranges special events in the
Jerusalem area, such as concerts and special days of in-depth Torah learning.
Named after Reva Margolin, the author’s “grandma” whose “love of Torah
study and commitment to the State of Israel” has served as inspiration for
Sharona not only to make Aliyah, but also to spread Torah study from the Land of
Israel and within its borders. Sharona’s educational career has
eminently prepared her for this role. After graduating from high school, Sharona
Margolin spent a year-and-a-half in Jerusalem during which she prepared for a
Hebrew Teacher’s Diploma, awarded by the Israel Ministry of Education. Returning
to the U.S. Sharona graduated in 1995 from Yeshiva University’s Stern College
for Women − Magna Cum Laude − with a Bachelor’s degree in Judaic Studies
(simultaneously receiving the award for excellence in Modern Hebrew Literature).
Sharona’s second degree, a Master’s, in Jewish Education, was awarded by Yeshiva
University’s Azrieli Graduate School. By then she was married to Josh
Halickman, a young Canadian student she had met in Israel. The young couple made
their home in Riverdale, N.Y. where Sharona was appointed the first
Congregational Intern at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, and where she later
served as the Madricha Ruchanit (Female Spiritual Mentor), providing religious
education and counseling to students of all ages and backgrounds. In
the summer of 2004, the Halickman family – Sharona, her husband Josh and their
three sons, Dov, Moshe and Yehuda – fulfilled their dream of making Aliyah,
ascending to the Land of Israel. They settled in the ancient capital of the Land
− Yerushalayim. It did not take long for Sharona Margolin Halickman to
begin teaching what she knows and loves well, classes in Judaism. But this was
not enough for the passionate Torah educator. She went on to establish Torat
Reva Yerushalayim, became its director and head teacher, and extended her
teaching experience to ever-wider audiences. In the words of Rabbi Gelman,
“Sharona has found a way to bring Torah to the people − especially people who
did not have the opportunity to be exposed to Torah ideas. She has made it her
mission in life to make Torah accessible to as many people as possible.”
Her book, Parsha Points is also designed for this objective, with
simultaneous publication of a weekly D’var Torah (Torah lesson) on the web or
via e-mail. Similarly, Sharona Halickman serves as instructor in numerous
one-year programs for overseas students in her capacity as an ATID (Academy for
Torah Initiatives and Directions) fellow. In September 2009, as part
of the greater organization of Torat Reva Yerushalayim, indefatigable Ms.
Halickman is opening Midreshet Devora, a new Modern Orthodox Post High School
Midrasha in Jerusalem for young women from North America (www.midreshetdevora.org)
where the students will be exposed to classes on Tanach, Prayer, Contemporary
Issues, Talmud, Women in Judaism, Zionism, Jewish Thought, Halacha,
Hashkafa/Mussar and, above all – love of Israel!

The packages will include healthy snacks and Purim treats. Our goal is to provide packages for residents of two full nursing homes in Jerusalem who study Torah with Torat Reva Yerushalayim. A donation of $18 covers one package, $180 covers packages for an entire floor of a nursing home. Please click on the following link to donate on line

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Sir,

I read with interest Douglas Rushkoff’s article “Open-source Judaism: There is a renaissance going on that doesn’t show up on organizational spreadsheets” (Up Front Aug. 19).

As the former Madricha Ruchanit of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and a recent immigrant (August ’04) I taught several different chavurot. Once arriving in Jerusalem, I came across many people who wanted to study Torah but could not find the time in their busy schedules to take classes at an institution or synagogue. They wanted to study Torah in an informal way at a time that was convenient for them but did not know where to start as far as finding a teacher, topic, or forming a group.

In response I started a non profit organization, “Torat Reva Yerushalayim” which promotes chavurah style Torah study in homes, synagogues, places of business and isolated communities. Torat Reva sets up groups and provides teachers and all source materials for a whole myriad of subjects. The study groups are open to people of all ages and backgrounds and are funded by Torat Reva supporters in the United States and around the world.

Torah study in Jerusalem and in Israel should not only be open to those who are coming from abroad or for those who have the time. Torah study can and should be open to everybody. Aside from studying, bonds of friendship have formed in these groups which meet either weekly or monthly which is why some like to call these groups chavurot.

For those who would like to join or start a “Torat Reva Yerushalayim” study group please email toratreva@yahoo.com .

The letter elicited responses from many supportive people across Israel interested in starting a Torat Reva study group.

Proceeds from the concert were set aside to help residents of the North who suffered during the war in Lebanon. On November 26, 2006, Sharona and Josh Halickman traveled to Haifa to see where the funds could best be distributed. The Effie Institute seemed like the perfect place to contribute the funds raised. The institute (www.efi.org.il) is named in memory of Capt. Effie Chovers, who fell in the Lebanese war in June 1982. The Effie institute helps children who are suffering from impaired learning ability. According to Noga Lachter, Director of the Institute, most of the children who attend classes at the Effie institute were displaced from their homes during the war this past summer. Most of the parents were unable to go to work due to the situation and suffered great financial losses. Many of the families are having trouble paying for the already subsidized education that the Effie institute provides. Thanks to the funds raised, students can get back to their regular routines and receive the individually tailored education that they desperately need. Thanks again to the sponsors of the concert as well as to all those who attended!
